“BLACK DANCE - USA…” is an incredibly energetic, educational and high spirited national dance festival. The 2016 activities include dance workshops in traditional West Afrikan (Mali, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Guinea), Dunham Technique, Afro Cuban and Salsa (ritual and social), African Caribbean, hip-hop, The Original Buckshop, social line dances and the partnering bop, and Kemetic yoga, as well as Afro Cuban percussion, all taught by some of the BADDDDEST!!! instructors. This year’s 31st anniversary concert features Voices of Congo Square. This production celebrates the treasured past of New Orleans’ sacred grounds… the beloved Congo Square in the heart of Treme. No matter what your background, you’ll leave every class having learned something new and/or another way of doing what you already know. From beginner to advanced, the non-dancer to dance professional, “BLACK DANCE - USA...” is for everyone!
The Better Family Life Cultural, Educational and Business Center has professional dance studios that are spacious, well lit, with some great dance floors. Dancers and musicians from all over the country will converge at the Cultural Center to create some astounding dance and music. Vendors will be set up starting on Thursday, selling a variety of items: natural body and hair care products, dance clothing and some great food. You will want to buy a T-shirt to let everyone know that you’ve been here!
AND FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, we are hosting a SLIDE EXPLOSION!!! This exciting new event is a series of classes where you can learn the latest slide combinations and the bop, a partnering dance created by Afrikan Americans in the 1950s. All of the classes will be taught by some of St. Louis finest instructors.
